People’s love for Porsche has been very well documented over the years. I don’t think I need to explain why at this point but some Porsches are more famous than others. Cars such as “Rexy”, “Moby Dick” and “Sally” have become symbols for the brand, transcending the car culture realm like few others have. However there is another famous Porsche that’s been doing the rounds across social media recently – Sid’s GT3RS.

Out of all the 992 generation 911 GT3 RS examples in Melbourne, this one gets around a lot and sees plenty of track time. It makes complete sense when you take a look at the rear wing and the aggressive diffuser. There’s no bloody way any of that will work properly on the street. The sponsor decals that Sid has added to his chalk and carbon coloured machine really finishes off the race car aesthetic.

Porsche haven’t just paid attention to aero around the back of the car – they’ve also paid attention to front aero, directing the airflow precisely where it’s needed. The bonnet vents are designed to pull air out of the front radiator and over the roof, increasing overall downforce. The air vents on top of the front guards are for brake cooling, whilst the large vertical strakes direct airflow around the side.

If this sounds advanced, then that’s because it is. Not even the Cup Car has that level of aero management, especially when you consider that this car has active aero. The rear wing can move to optimise cornering speeds and reduce drag in a straight line, ensuring that all 525 HP can be used to the full. I believe there are active flaps in the floor, but I need to verify that.

Only 525HP you say? Yes! By today’s standard it’s not a big number and Porsche are acutely aware of that, but they are more interested in building a car that can attack every track than every drag strip. Power is not the focus, because it can soo easily be wasted through wheelspin. Grip is the name of the game, but you don’t have to be a racing driver to enjoy it. It has all the electronic assists you could ever need, so if you aren’t the best driver, it won’t try to kill you… unlike the Ferrari F40.

The way this car combines performance and usability is absolutely seemless. It may look like a racecar but it’s not a total mess on the road. Some may call these “poser” cars but I don’t agree with that for one second. Nothing on this car has been put on for show and Sid is not a pretentious person by any means. His willingness to share this incredible ride is what makes it soo famous around these parts.
